Cable Assembly MOQ vs Component Pack Quantities

A request for 120 harnesses may use hundreds of contacts, a smaller number of housings and several lengths of cable. Some components are offered in packs or reels that do not match the finished order quantity. This can affect the quotation, but it does not mean that a component pack size is automatically the minimum order for the completed harness.

Ask which quantity each figure describes. The purchasing decision becomes clearer when finished-assembly demand, material consumption, component sourcing quantities and remaining stock appear as separate lines.

Separate four different quantities

QuantityWhat it describesWhat it does not establish
Finished-assembly MOQMinimum finished quantity accepted in the particular offerNumber of terminals in a manufacturer's reel
Component packaging quantityQuantity in a stated pack format for an identified partEvery distributor's minimum sale quantity
Procurement quantity or multipleQuantity and increment available under the actual sourcing offerMaterial that will necessarily be consumed
Assembly material requirementBOM usage plus separately justified additional useAutomatic ownership or charging of leftovers

A source may offer a different quantity from the original manufacturer's full package, or may require a stated multiple for the requested supply route. Confirm the actual offer and its identity, traceability and handling conditions. Do not assume either that a full reel must always be bought or that smaller quantities will always be available.

For a documented packaging example, TE Connectivity's 63945-1 product record lists a packaging quantity of 20,000 and the method as reel. That is a specific bobbin terminal's packaging information, not a cable-assembly MOQ, a recommended part for the example below or a statement that Zeakka supplies that terminal separately.

Calculate the requirement from the released BOM

Begin with the number of finished assemblies and the number of each component used per assembly. Count populated contacts, seals and accessories from the actual configuration; the number of housing cavities may differ from the number populated. Include the correct units for wire, sleeve and other length-based items.

Then identify any additional material needed for agreed setup, samples or destructive checks. Keep its purpose and quantity visible. It is not a general percentage to add to every order, and it should not be hidden by increasing the BOM usage of the finished product.

Check usable existing stock only when its identity, revision applicability, condition and allocation are confirmed. A quantity on a stock report may already be reserved for another order or held pending review. Treat unverified availability as an open input rather than subtracting it from the purchase requirement.

A fictional contact-quantity calculation

EX-MQ-45 is an invented order for 120 assemblies, each with six contacts of fictional part T45. Assume no usable opening stock. The parties have separately agreed that 30 additional contacts are needed for the stated setup and inspection activities. For this example only, the sourcing offer is in complete packs of 1,000 contacts.

CalculationResult
Contacts incorporated into assemblies: 120 × 6720
Separately agreed additional use30
Total planned requirement: 720 + 30750
Procurement under this fictional pack offer1,000
Planned remainder: 1,000 − 750250

The finished order remains 120 assemblies. The 250-contact remainder is planned material left after the stated use, not 250 extra harnesses and not an automatic charge to the customer. Actual consumption and remaining stock must be reconciled after the work.

Before treating the remainder as useful inventory, establish who will hold it, its identity and traceability, how future use is authorized, and what happens if the assembly changes. A future order may need a different contact. “We can use it later” is a planning assumption until there is an agreed arrangement and a compatible requirement.

Now consider a separate hypothetical offer of 750 identified contacts in an acceptable supply format. It would match the planned quantity, but its total cost, lead time, traceability and process suitability still need comparison. A smaller purchase is not automatically the better offer. Conversely, a larger pack is not automatically economical merely because its unit price is lower.

Evaluate the whole BOM, not only the largest reel

Another component can determine the feasible order. A housing, lock or sleeve may have a different package, supply increment or availability constraint. Show each constrained item alongside the requirement and proposed supply quantity. Avoid quoting a single “material MOQ” without identifying which item creates it.

For example, the contact calculation above does not demonstrate that 120 complete assemblies can be built. The approved housings and all other required items must also be available. A surplus of T45 cannot cover a shortage of its mating contact or the specified housing.

Use the cable assembly BOM template for component identities and quantities per assembly. The purpose of the commercial quantity review is to compare that requirement with available supply arrangements, not to redefine the assembly around a convenient package.

Ask how the quotation treats remaining material

QuestionUseful written answer
What drives the finished MOQ?Named order or process condition in the specific offer
What material must be purchased?Exact items, quantities and stated supply assumptions
What additional use is included?Purpose, quantity and treatment if actual use differs
How is remaining material charged?Included, separately charged or another explicitly agreed basis
Who holds and controls it?Agreed responsibility, identification and permitted future use
What changes the arrangement?Revision changes, order changes or other stated conditions

Do not infer ownership from the presence of a separate material charge. Equally, do not assume the assembly price entitles the buyer to take every remaining component. Establish the commercial arrangement explicitly and retain the stock record that supports it.

If customer-supplied parts are proposed as an alternative, review the customer-material reconciliation process. That changes the supply responsibility and may affect receipt, handling and scheduling; it does not remove those tasks.

Compare order sizes without confusing forecasts with purchases

Request relevant quantity scenarios using the same assembly revision and acceptance scope. Show the immediate finished quantity, associated material purchases, separately quoted charges and any confirmed future-use arrangement. The quotation cost guide covers recurring price and one-time charges; keep those costs separate from the quantity calculation here.

Do not divide a reel cost across a hoped-for annual volume and present that result as the confirmed cost of the first order. Likewise, a price for a larger finished batch does not establish the price for small releases spread over time. Ask how each actual order arrangement will be quoted.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 1,000-piece contact pack require 1,000 harnesses?

No. Convert the assembly demand into contact usage and compare it with the actual sourcing offer. The finished MOQ is a separate condition requiring confirmation.

Is extra setup material always a fixed percentage?

No percentage is established here. Ask for the project-specific purpose and quantity and keep actual consumption distinguishable from finished-product usage.

Can leftover material reduce the next order's price?

Possibly, if usable stock and its agreed commercial treatment support that offer. Confirm identity, allocation, compatibility with the next revision and the supplier's current quotation.

Request a quantity-based review

For low-volume cable assemblies, send the released BOM, immediate quantity and separately identified future demand. Zeakka coordinates supplier review as a trading partner. Contact Zeakka to clarify finished-order conditions, component sourcing quantities and any proposed treatment of remaining material. No standard MOQ or stock-holding arrangement is promised by this guide.
